Getting In:

Satkhira is in situated in Khulna division. It is bordered to the north by Jessore District, on the south by the Bay of Bengal, to the east by Khulna District, and to the west by Pargana District of West Bengal. The main rivers are Morichap River, Kholpotua River, Betna River, Raimangal River, Hariabhanga River, Ichamati River, Betrabati River and Kalindi-Jamuna River.

If you want to go there from Dhaka then you may use bus. It will take mostly 7 hours to reach the place. The journey will not bother you as the road system is too much good. So don’t be tensed. Not only that you can also go there from Khulna or Rajshahi. It will take a little bit more to go from Rajshahi than from Khulna. After your reaching you have to make a short trip to reach there. But one thing that I can say from personal point of view that is you will not feel bad to complete the journey.

The hotel management is very good here. You can get different types of hotels here. If you want less priced hotel then you will get it & if you want good hotels then there is also no problem. The people that are responsible to watch it are really very much friendly. You will feel great when you will be here. Some of the hotels name is included here-

One thing that I can tell you that is the food of here is a treat to eat. The fine taste of it will make you feel like in heaven. You can’t miss it. The food management is also very good. You can get different types of food items there. It won’t be a great problem to find a suitable restaurant for you to eat. The foods are also very delicious. You can get foods also from the resident hotel where you are staying. I think to taste different food items of different restaurant will be a good idea. I am telling from my prospective view that you will enjoy the food.

The fine area can be seen from foot. If you want to see the whole place then it is better to walk in then you can see everything very clearly. The transportation medium in the town is Rickshaw. You can also get van there. The quantity of this type of transportation medium is high in the city. So you don’t have to play a waiting game to get that.

The area will give you a lot of pleasure. You will not feel to leave the city. Believe me it will remove the monotonous type of life & will give you a fresh life. So I think it will good not to delay & make a trip there as soon as possible.

the wonderful sanctuary BAIKKA BEEL

Baikka beel is another bird sanctuary of this region. It is on the eastern part of the Hail haor. Hail haor is a large wetland encompassing about 100 hectares. It is about 20km from the Moulvibazar town. Baikka beel was declared to be a sanctuary for fishes in 2003.

Baikka beel is located in an area of great natural beauty. The widespread empty wetland near it is simply amazing. The beautiful scenario stretching over miles creates an unbelievable feeling. You can see the blue horizon meeting the blue haor water here.

This beel is the living place of numerous birds and fishes. From the time you enter the haor area you will be engrossed by the sweet chirping of various birds. Moorhans, marsh harriers, teals, ducks and many other birds are seen here. If you are a bird watcher you will be very delighted.

There is a watchtower about 2 stories height to provide a better view of the landscape. The beel area isn’t only beautiful because of these birds but also for the beautiful lilies, lotus and many other unknown aquatic flowers and plants. While riding a boat you will find yourself surrounded by large leafy lilies. Much of the water is usually covered with the flowers in their blooming season.

The best time of visit should be very early in the morning, starting from sunrise to two hours after that. Another preferable time will be in the afternoon before sunset. Although there is no specific duration of entering the area or climbing the watch tower but this two specific times will enable you to enjoy the best sights. You can also stay there from dawn to dusk and don’t worry about food, there are a few small restaurants to satisfy your hunger.

Travelling

You can take autorickshaws (called CNG locally) for your travel. If you start from Srimangal, then for a trip of travelling to the beel, about a 2-hour hault amd returning back to Srimangal will cost about 400 – 500 BDT. You can also use a bus in that case you will have to use a cycle or some other transport as bus will drop you at the entrance of the country road. Private cars, jeeps and even cycles can also be used if you have no problem reading the signs or finding your way to the beel.

Hakaluki haor: Largest haor of Bangladesh

Sylhet division has many haors as an integral part of its unique ecosystem. Hakaluki is one of these haors. It is the home of numerous animals, fishes and birds and a large variety of flora and fauna.

Hakaluki haor is situated in the eastern part of Bangladesh adjacent to the Assam-Bangladesh border. 5 upzillas comprise this haors total area. 3 of them Kulaura, Juri and Baralekha are under Moulvibazar district. While the other 2 upzillas – Golapganj and Fenchuganj are under Sylhet division. It covers a large surface area of about 181.15 km2. Around 40% of this land falls in the territory of Baralekha upzilla. This huge land coverage makes it Bangladesh’s largest haor and one of Asia’s larger wetlands. However, 80 inter-connecting beels form the Hakaluki haor. In dry season this haor dries up much as like other haors. During monsoon establishes itself in a full to the brink condition. Then the inter-connected water bodies combine with each other to function as one.

This haor basin supports numerous wetland habitats. Different types of plants are found here. Various known- unknown plants and rare aquatics adorn this area with shades of green. The abundance of trees and herbs is surprising. But these aren’t the greatest treasure of the land, rather the wide range of wild animal is. It provides sanctuary to many species of animals and birds including some very rare kinds – already declared as threatened, vulnerable, endangered and critically endangered species.

A total of 558 species of animal and birds have been identified here. Amphibians, reptiles, aves and mammals all of them enrich the biodiversity of this haor region. Among these animals are the freshwater Turtle and Tortoises, Otters, Capped Langur, Pallas’s Fish Eagle, dolphin, snakes and many more.

Besides trees and animals Hakaluki haor has something more special for the bird lovers. Presence of birds of many different species adds life to this haor. 417 species of aves have been spotted here among which 26 are totally threatened, 2 are vulnerable, 10 are endangered and 14 critically endangered species. Besides local birds many migratory birds visit this area in winter. The number of migratory birds are increasing every year. As a result Hakaluki haor has become a significant site for bird watching. Wide variety of waterfowl seen here is one of the main attractions. Among the other species are the Fulvous Whistling Duck, Lesser Whistling Duck, Falcated Duck, Ruddy Shell Duck, Tufted Duck, Common Shell Duck, Cotton Pygmy Goose, Greylag Geese Northern Pintail, Northern Shoveller, Graganey, Blue-winged Teal, Mallard, Gadwall, Wigeon, Common Teal, Ferruginous Pochard, Common Pochard, Indian Pond Heron, Grey Heron, Cattle Egret, Great Egret, Large Egret, Little Egret, Intermediate Egret, Purple Swamp Hen, Pheasant-Tailed Jacana, Little Grebe, Great Crested Grebe, Little Cormorant, Great Cormorant, Asian Open bill, Common Coot, Pintail Snipe, Marsh Sandpiper, Little Ringed Plover, Golden Plover, Wood Sandpiper, Spotted Green Shank, Red Shank, Red-Wattled Lapwing, Brown-Headed Gull and Black-Headed Gull. Rarely seen – Bears Pochards and Grey-Headed Lapwings are also found here at times.

Hakaluki haor has been designated as an ECA – Ecologically Critical Area under environment conservation act in 1995. It is also declared as a protected Ramsar with a view to conserve wetlands and utilize them properly.

Travelling:

Regular bus service to Srimangal or Moulvibazar is available from Sayedabad Dhaka. It takes only about 4 hours. once you reach any of these places you may take a rent a car to go to hakaluki haor. You can also go to Srimangal by train. If you are eager to squeeze the time duration from hours to minutes you can also use the airway with little increase in the expense. In that case also you will be requiring a car or local bus to take you from the Sylhet Osmani Airport to the haor region.

Accommodation:

For accommodation there are hotels available in the Moulvibazar town. You can easily go to Hakaluki haor from there during daytime and stay in the town hotel during the night.

When to visit:

Hakaluki haor Adorns itself differently in different seasons. During monsoon the haor area turns into an endless sea. In winter it’s a different picture. Hundreds of migratory birds flock together and make the haor heavenly for the spectators mainly the bird watchers.

Make a trip to Puthia bird village where bird and people adore together

It is far infrequent to locate such a place, both rural and urbane areas, where people are habituated to leave bed in the morning hearing tweeting of birds. It will be really amazing for you to visit such a village in Rajshahi and make a vacation with different flying creatures.

In that village, sun shines or not, people begin their working, school goers march for learning, farmers step towards cropland and at dusk wrap up their day’s work by hearing colloquy and chirping of thousands of birds.

Not only in winter, but all the year round the village become abode of thousands of birds, both indigenous and migratory, those have made the pastoral village Pochamaria into a safe asylum.

The bird’s sanctuary attracts lots of bird lovers, from both home and abroad, at village Pochamaria Sanctuary, located some 35-kilometers northeast of Rajshahi city and 15 km West to Natore town.

Villagers also bear profound belief on birds as harbinger of good fortune despite tolerating annoyance of their [birds] damaging of ripened crops, fruits and leafs of trees.

Though their [bird] stupidity and nuisance embarrasses locals enormous and brings many sufferings when they take flight with meals, chicks and fish from wetlands.

The farmers, however, are the best beneficiaries from eco-friendly birds when the creature makes cropland free from harmful insects and crop-killing weeds by eating.

The bird friendly people decided using limited insect-repellents so that birds are not poisoned. This feeling of locals on birds is truly rare and unbelievable.

During fishing session one can see in the village ponds and water bodies that many fish-eating birds flocks here as uninvited guests for appetizing fishes.

If you visit the village and notice entire scene, one could able to get a great test of life.

It’s also very much pleasing as at daytime hundreds of birds are seen collecting foodstuffs at nearby water bodies and wetlands at their own fashion. Birds moves at large during locals busy with their daily works like cultivating, fishing or working.

Country’s eminent ornithologists from different universities, foreign tourists, bird lovers like Japanese visitor Takuma Kurataki, Dubai Zoo Curator, Bangladesh Bird Club Founder president also eminent ornithologist Enam Ul Haque, Dr. Ali Raza Khan however, frequently visits the safe den.

In last March, local Bird Protection Club and Bangladesh Birds Club jointly organized a day long bird fair here to make aware locals about save bird and nature.

Surprisingly, bird-loving villagers have strictly prohibited hunting birds in 42 square kilometer area and declared the village a bird sanctuary.

Any nature lovers with their family members have a nice opportunity to blend with nature and have scope to spend a night with birds if they able to make a trip.

Within 50 minutes one can reach the village amazingly without help of any tourist guide as hundreds of aerial birds along with members of Bird club welcome visitors any season of year!

A good number of cheap-rated residential hotels are available both in Natore town and Rajshahi city for visitors.

The highway communication is very easy, inexpensive and smooth as both motorized and non-motorized vehicles are available from Puthia upazila headquarters (on the Rajshahi-Dhaka highway).

Beside visiting Bird village visitor have scope to peep through nearby archeological and tourist spots like Puthia Jaminder Bari, Uttara Gana Bhaban at Natore town, Tahirpur Jaminder Bari, Rajshahi Barendra Research museum, Sadhonpur Disabled Rehabilitation Center. Those historical spots are surrounded by the bird village and distance of those places within 20 kms.

Chirping of bird attains tranquility in mind that makes alliance with people and real natural life taste.

One can witness many rare mixtures of birds like Oriental Magpie, Turtle Dove, Asian Koel, white and painted stork, herons and owls from very little range of vision.

Any way, visitors should not forget to carry binocular and digital zoomed camera during the trip otherwise one may miss enjoy dancing, feeding and swimming birds either on top of tree or wetlands. So try to avail the opportunity to discover the bird’s heaven at your yard!
